Existing Buildings Study
BayREN’s Existing Buildings Study provides local governments with data about the existing buildings in their jurisdictions together with their energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. The study will also identify the actions that will be needed to eliminate carbon emissions from the most common building types by 2045 and assess the effect of those actions on our most vulnerable populations.
Existing Building Study Dashboard
The dashboard contains information about the existing building stock in the Bay Area by jurisdiction, including numbers of buildings by use, vintage, and size. The dashboard also estimates energy use and greenhouse gas emissions for those buildings.
Dashboard Methodology
The data in the dashboard comes from a variety of sources, including assessor’s records, jurisdiction-specific data, NREL’s ResStock and ComStock, and more. Where data is not available, estimates are provided. Detailed information on the data and methodology used to create the dashboard are in the Methodology Report. If you notice any problems with the data, please let us know using the feedback form here or in the dashboard.

Building Characteristics Analysis
There are many other building characteristics that affect a building’s ability to reduce its energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, including panel sizes, building ownership types, and more. This report collects and summarizes the available data on these characteristics for common building types in the Bay Area. (Estimated completion November 2024)
Decarbonization Pathways
The final portion of the project will identify the actions are needed to fully decarbonize the Bay Area’s existing buildings and will consider their potential equity impacts. (Estimated completion January 2025)
